The route begins in Timoleague Village, where the Argideen River flows into the estuary and heads along towards Courtmacsherry.

As this is a tidal estuary, large expanses of sand and mud flats are revealed. This is a big attraction to hungry birds. In winter, you can expect to see a large number of waders, waterfowl and divers. Described by many as a bird watchers paradise.
