Birdwatching
Courtmacsherry estuary is designated as a special area of conservation (SAC) and is protected by the wildlife bill 1999. The estuary runs from Timoleague to Courtmacsherry. This is a superb location for bird watching in West Cork.
The estuary begins in Timoleague Village, where the Argideen River flows into the estuary. Here you will see the spectacular ruins of a medieval abbey which is approximately 700 years old.
Head along the estuary towards Courtmacsherry and as this is a tidal estuary, large expanses of sand and mud flats are revealed. This is a big attraction to hungry birds. In winter, you can expect to see a large number of waders, waterfowl and divers. Described by many as a bird watchers paradise.
